Look at the strategy of the roman phalanx and tell me that it is not used on protesters. All those armored men lining up shield in hand, replace the spears with truncheons at the ready. Just replace a hail of arrows with rubber bullets and tear gas and you'll see what I mean.
We live in a country that uses full suits of armor on its own people in protest, and only partial gear against the enemies over seas. Swat teams have better armor than our military. Look at this picture and think of all of the other media portrayals of armored super soldiers.

being able to see djhives blog or not is irrevelant. you own journey of learning is what matters, you began your journey without djhives and you will finish it without djhives. Well, there is a little problem with your analysis. The Spartans were basically Greeks which have nothing to do with Romans. Phalanx is a Greek formation. In fact, Phalanxs proved itself to be a useless formation against Roman legions which were quickier and more versatile.
However, I agree with the idea the elite consider themselves as descendants of the Roman Empire and this has a quite simple explanation. Centuries after the end of the Roman empire, in the IX century to be more exact, the indoeuropean tribe of the Askenazis converted to judaism in Central Europe, in the land which is, nowadays, known as Germany. Curiously enough there was a synchronicity between this event and the foundation of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation which was, basically, the heirs of the Western Roman empire.
